What Happens When You Learn to See
The Goats in Kenya
A group of my students photographed a project for a nonprofit in Kenya. We sold the images at a gallery event and used the money to provide 156 goats to a village building a women's empowerment program.
It changed that whole community. Kids went to school. Families climbed out of poverty.
A year and a half later, one of those girls became the first in her family to graduate college. She invited me to celebrate on Zoom. It all started with a handful of photographs.
The Wildfire
One of my students lost his home in a wildfire. He borrowed a camera, went back to where his house used to stand, and photographed it.
That image won Best of Show.
Not because of perfect gear or a perfect moment. Because he'd learned to see clearly, even when everything around him was falling apart.
Iceland
We took a group of students to Iceland to create a music video for the Down Syndrome community — a concert pianist and composer, a 100-year-old church lit up at night, full production.
It became one of the most powerful projects we've ever done — because a group of teenagers decided their photography could be about something bigger than themselves.
